Bowling Spares

Ahh, so after you first shot there are still pins standing. Don't worry. You still got one more chance to knock all the pins down in this frame.

If most of the remaining pins are on the left, move a bit right. You want to roll the ball between the 2nd and 3rd arrows and aim for the pin closest to you.

It will take a bit of practice for spares, but like anything else in bowling, practice makes perfect!

What about one pin?

You just have to make sure the ball touches (even lightly) the pin. Using the tips and techniques above, it shouldn't be that hard, right?

How to Bowl a Strike

Now, we get to the part everybody wants: How to Bowl a Strike?

You should always aim to get a strike on every frame.(turn) It is common misconception for beginners that you want to hit the pins right down the middle. Actually you want to hit the pins in an area called the pocket.

For right handers, the pocket is between the one and three pins. For left handers the pocket is between the one and two pins. You want to maximize the contact the ball has with these pins. For right handers, you want the ball to curve into these pins from the right. Left handlers, the left.

Alright so how do we release the ball?

This is for right handers. (Left handlers reverse everything)

As I said before, you want to start your approach four and half steps back from the foul line. You should take you first step with your RIGHT leg first. This is the step where you have your right arm out.

The second step is where you bring the ball back. At about the same time when you take the second step, the ball should be perpendicular to the floor.

The third step occurs when the ball is extend behind you and the final step is the forward release of the ball. You don't want to throw the ball. It is more of a rolling motion where the forward momentum of the ball provides the power.

For a righty, you want to roll the ball so it goes between the second and third arrows on the left. Use your right shoulder to aim.

If you find that your ball curves to the right, you should move right. Vice Versa for the left.

The first step is knowing how to hold the ball.

See the three holes? The isolated hole right in the middle, separate from the two holes closer together are for the thumbs. The other two holes are for you middle two fingers. (see the fingers painted red on the diagram below)

To hold the ball properly, hold the ball palm up with the thumb facing directly toward the ceiling. hen turn the thumb slight to the left to a 10 o'clock position. This is the way the ball should be held until its release.

Next, it is time for the approach. You should being your approach about four and a half steps behind the foul line of the lane. Therefore it should take you four steps from beginning the approach to releasing the ball.Approximately four steps away from the foul line is a row of dots. These dots tell you where to position your feet. For a righty, your left foot should be on the CENTER dot. Vice-versa for the lefty.
